Norman
Tischler, whose giant, robust tenor sax tone has made him one of the premier
horn players in Northeast Ohio. Also a seasoned alto saxophone, clarinet, and
flute player, Norman is equally at home when called upon by theaters, bands,
combos, or as a solo stroller. Norman was named “Best Horn” performer in the Cleveland Free Times Music Awards.
A
Brooklyn, New York native, Norman arrived in Cleveland years ago as a VISTA
Volunteer and quickly found himself a gig in the house band for WEWS's Upbeat Show where he backed up dozens of
nationally known rock and soul artists. After the demise of the show, he joined
the renowned band Tiny Alice with whom he toured nationally and recorded for
Kama Sutra Records. He also has a soft spot in his heart for old standards.
It
would be hard to count the bands Norman has played with since that time. To
mention just a few: Robert Junior Lockwood, Wild Horses, Blue Lunch, Travis
Haddix, Freewheelin', DT and the Shakes, and the Motion. It is with the Motion
that he can be seen performing in the film Light
of Day.
Norman’s
educational credits include a B.S.
degree from New
York University, in Music Education and graduate work at Ball State University
Muncie, Indiana, where he took the Orff Shulwerk Training, and Cleveland State
University.
Norman is one of the Cleveland area's best known and most
sought-after sax players. In addition to club dates, he has performed at the
2009 Chicago Blues Festival and a 2008 tour of England with Travis Haddix.
Other dates included the party after the NBA All-Star Game, Blossom Music
Center, Downtown Cleveland at "Sparx in the City," and significant
religious life-cycle events, including weddings, anniversaries, bat/bat mitzvahs,
and funerals. Norman Tischler is also one of the area's most highly
regarded woodwind instrument teachers.
