Matt Horwich

For more than a decade Matt Horwich has worked as a freelance saxophonist in the Midwest, throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Illinois, performing at over a thousand special events and weekly engagements at hundreds of jazz clubs, bars, restaurants, country clubs, hotels and private events.  He has played in a variety of musical contexts including straight-ahead, contemporary and modern jazz, swing, Latin, blues, rhythm and blues, funk, soul, motown, pop, dance, disco, merengue, salsa, reggae and classical.  His group is typically a trio and can be a duo or even solo, all the way up through an eight-piece ensemble augmented with male and female vocalists, acoustic bass, trumpet, and guitar.  His group now features Dan Murphy on keyboards, Alex Morris on drums and several multi-talented vocalists.  Songs are by artists such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Clifford Brown, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Joe Lovano, Kenny Garrett, Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett., Medeski, Martin and Wood, Grover Washington, Jr., David Sanborn, Kenny G, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Temptations, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind And Fire, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Average White Band, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Sade, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Jeff Lorber and The Yellow Jackets.

 

Matt has also taught saxophone and theory for many years, and has served on the faculty at Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus.  He received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Case Western Reserve University, and studied with world-renowned saxophonist Kevin Burner.  While enrolled at CWRU, he played in the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Wind Ensemble as first alto saxophone and section leader, and CWRU’s Jazz Ensemble One as lead alto.  Press coverage on Matt has included Fox Eight News, 107.3 The Wave WNWV, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Cleveland Scene, The Tri-C JazzFest, The Jazz & Blues Report, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, The Cleveland Federation of Musicians, Cleveland Bob Stop, Get Hep Swing, Borders Books and Music and The Cleveland Museum of Art.  Matt has performed with many bands including Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, The Edsels, Dave C and the Sharptones, The Jerry Bruno Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and The Fat Tuesday Big Band and Laura Varcho and Company.
